my boss replied with a simple ‘ok’. it was terrifying.

Congrats on the new job! And on getting rid of the old one. Schools could be fun, though if incorporating anti-shooting features is really a thing, that might be a bit depressing. In any event, I once attended an open plan school, so I’m sure you can do better than that. Instead I’d recommend cool open atria, like this one where I went 1st-3rd grade (crappy pic is best I can find online):

Congratulations! My wife was the owner’s rep/ project manager for a school system for about 10 years. Most of the schools in her area were cookie-cutter. One architect made a killing off the school system because every time a new school was being built, they wanted it just like the others, so he was hired to “update” the design. I think the only real updates were mechanical/electrical and perhaps more secure entries.
